Position: Gardener & Caretaker

Focus On the Family Africa is seeking a reliable hardworking gardener and caretaker to join our team. This position is ideal for someone who takes pride in keeping outdoor spaces neat, vibrant, and well cared for. While the primary focus is on gardening and landscaping, the role also includes general property upkeep, light maintenance tasks, and some security responsibilities. The position requires living on the property in a small bachelor cabin, which is provided. While in this position, you will be fulfilling the mission of enriching the lives of families, engaging the culture, advocating for life, and spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The work is meaningful, the culture is rewarding, and the purpose is eternal.

Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the directors and team regarding administration duties.
  • Regular grass cutting to maintain lawns.
  • Trimming and maintaining verges, keeping edges tidy and debris-free.
  • Weeding flower beds, lawns, and paved areas to ensure neatness.
  • Watering the garden and ensuring pot plants receive proper care.
  • Clearing and maintaining fire breaks to reduce fire risks.
  • Pruning and trimming plants, shrubs, and trees to encourage healthy growth.
  • Loosening soil around plants to improve aeration and water absorption.
  • Raking or blowing grass cuttings and fallen leaves.
  • Collecting and transporting green waste to designated areas.
  • Applying fertilizer bi-annually to grass and plants.
  • Cleaning and storing gardening equipment after use.
  • Assisting with landscaping projects to enhance the beauty of the property.
  • Sweeping or blowing key areas (car park, reception, boardroom, patio, driveway, and upper deck).
  • Keeping cabin and containers clean and organised.
  • Wiping down air conditioning units weekly.
  • Washing and assisting with upkeep of cars, trailers, and vehicles.
  • Supporting gutter and roof cleaning (under supervision).
  • Helping with garbage removal and clean-up after collection.
  • Maintaining storage area & containers in a neat condition.
  • Arming and disarming the building daily as required.
  • Monitoring and caring for the property to ensure it is secure.
  • Responding to after-hours alarm callouts with Blue Security.
  • Promptly reporting any maintenance, security, or property issues.
  • Assisting the Operations Manager (direct report) with any other department related support that may be required.
  • Live in position – One bedroom Gemini hut on the property.
  • Ad hoc duties as required.

Requirements

  • Previous gardening/landscaping experience is preferred.
  • Ability to perform physical outdoor work in all seasons.
  • Honest, reliable, and able to take initiative.
  • Willingness to assist with property upkeep beyond gardening. 

Competencies and Skills:

  • Willingness to assist with property upkeep beyond gardening. 
  • Ability and willingness to multitask while maintaining a high quality of work.
  • Positive-minded individual with a good work ethic and can function independently.
  • Being onsite over weekends and evenings is important.
  • Lives-in the accommodation.
  • Must be Fluent in Zulu and English.
  •  A valid driver’s license with driving experience (an office vehicle will be provided) – preferred.
